Jingdezhen, located in the northeast of Jiangxi Province, China, is a famous porcelain capital with a long history of over 1,700 years. Since the Tang Dynasty, Jingdezhen has been known as the "Porcelain Capital of China" due to its unique resources of kaolin and skilled craftsmen. It became the imperial kiln of the Ming Dynasty in the early 15th century, and produced exquisite porcelain for the imperial court.
History, light, and imagination - this isn't a far-off land, it's Jingdezhen, Jiangxi.
In the early 17th century, during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, a French missionary named Antoine Claude Chappuis came to Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of China. From the moment he saw Jingdezhen ceramics, Chappuis was deeply attracted by the porcelain's "white as jade, clear as a mirror, thin as paper, and resonant as a bell". He was amazed by the exquisite Chinese ceramics. Curious about how these colorful and beautiful ceramics were made, Chappuis conducted secret investigations while carrying out his missionary work, hoping to uncover the secrets of Jingdezhen ceramics.
Thus, this French missionary came to Yaoli Ancient Town to explore the production of ceramics. The name "Gaoling" originates from the fact that the high-quality kaolin is produced in the Gaoling Mountain located 40 kilometers east of Jingdezhen. Porcelain made from this magical white clay, known as "jade bone and ice skin", is acid and abrasion-resistant and does not change color even after thousands of years. However, after large-scale mining during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties the annual output of porcelain clay in Jingdezhen has plummeted from the peak of 350,000 tons in the last century to only 77,000 tons in 2007. Other porcelain clay resources are also difficult to utilize due to their deep location and high mining difficulty. Nowadays, the production of ceramics and porcelain using actual "Gaoling" kaolin, which has been used for over five thousand years, is becoming increasingly rare.
